Our Team

Coastal Kids Home Care improves the quality of life for children healing from injury or short-term illness, coping with chronic conditions or developmental delays, and those facing the end-of-life. Our staff provides in-home nursing, specialized therapies, social services and bereavement counseling to support the whole family.

Leadership

Margy began her nursing career in 1986 at UCSF Hospital where she discovered her love of pediatric nursing. In 1991, she joined a home health agency and found her calling in caring for children at home, she has been supervising pediatric nursing programs in the home health setting ever since. Responding to a need for high-quality in-home pediatric medical care in our community, in June of 2005 Margy co-founded Coastal Kids Home Care, a labor of love and her proudest accomplishment. Since then, Margy has been honored with the Award of Excellence from The End of Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) for her work with terminal children. Margy has been a committed and selfless leader who has had her own share of ups and downs. She is a daughter, wife, and mother who has dedicated her life to caring for others.

Hieu Nguyen, MD received his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine and completed his pediatric residency at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan. During his studies, Dr. Hieu trained in Palliative Care under Dr. Chuang and Dr. Tremonti and completed comprehensive coursework in this area. He participated in medical missions abroad to Ecuador, Peru, Nicaragua, Ghana, Haiti, Viet Nam and street medicine in Detroit. Dr. Hieu is dedicated to providing the highest quality of care to children, especially those with special healthcare needs. He is excited to join the Coastal Kids Home Care team as Medical Director of their Pediatric Palliative Care program. Outside of the office, Dr. Hieu is married with two young sons. He enjoys volleyball, cooking and traveling.

Kelli has twenty years of development and communications experience working in non-profits in the United States and internationally. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame she volunteered as a child advocate and later pursued her MA in Conflict Management from Johns Hopkins, SAIS. Her subsequent work involved the design and management of post-conflict and disaster response initiatives around the world. As a mother of three young children, including a son with special healthcare needs, Kelli is a passionate advocate for children and parents coping with complex medical issues and she is honored to work with the Coastal Kids team.

Cassandra received her undergraduate degree from Lehigh University in Psychology, with a minor in Spanish. At Lehigh University, she played NCAA Division 1 softball and received All-Conference honors 3 of 4 years. Following college, she joined Teach for America and taught first grade in Las Vegas, while working towards her masters. She received her M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Nevada Las Vegas. After four years of teaching experience and two years of community outreach experience, Cassandra is passionate and dedicated to promoting better health, education and development outcomes for young people. In her free time, Cassandra’s other loves include spending time with family, playing sports and traveling.

Office Staff

Maria joined Coastal Kids in 2009. She obtained her MA in accounting and is currently pursuing her CPA license. Prior to joining Coastal Kids she managed a chiropractic office for eight years. As a mother of three, her passion is to see the organization grow, enabling it to serve more children and families in need. Maria is a dedicated, team-player committed to ensuring Coastal Kids Home Care is able to care for children in our community for many years to come.

Monica has over 10-years of administrative experience working in various specialty clinics. After caring for her grandmother with a very hands-on approach, Monica grew passionate about healthcare, particular nursing. Since joining the team in 2016, she has been committed to helping the organization grow in order for children and their families to have access to high quality home care services. Outside of Coastal Kids, Monica loves coaching her daughter in volleyball and watching her son play baseball.

Karen is originally from Mexico, but migrated to the U.S.A three years ago.  She received her Bachelor’s degree in International Economics Relations in Mexico at the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Mexico).  She has worked in several positions, including scholar in buyer and logistics for a food industry, agriculture machinery buyer at a construction company, and prospect vending at Coca-Cola Company.  She has also worked in school programs dedicated to encouraging children with limit resources to study and get a better quality of life.  Karen has been with Coastal Kids Home Care since April 2019 and says she is "very grateful for the opportunity received".  Karen is extremely dedicated to the growth of the company.  She would like to study a MA in finance in the future.

 

Pediatric Nursing

Robin received her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from California State University of Dominguez Hills. Since then, she has worked in Pediatric Intensive Care at a number of different hospitals including Children's Hospital Oakland. She has been an RN for 28 years and has experience in pediatric Burn ICU, Pediatric Sedation, Pediatric PICC line team and Pediatric Critical Care Transport. Robin is committed to providing excellent medical and palliative care to children, where they most want to be - at home. Robin has one son who will soon be a teenager. When she is not working for Coastal Kids, she loves watching her son play baseball and hanging out with her best girlfriends.

Kim received her B.S. at University of San Diego and her B.S.N at St. Louis University. Kim has worked as a nurse coordinator, and staff RN for both children and adolescents gaining almost 10 years of experience before taking time off to raise her two boys. Kim has been with Coastal Kids since 2015 and is happy to be doing what she loves again.

Theresa received her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from University of Nebraska Medical Center. Shortly after her graduation, Theresa moved to California where she began work as a hospice nurse.  After working in hospice for 2 years Theresa joined Coastal Kids Home Care. With her experience with palliative care and her desire to work with children, Coastal Kids was a perfect fit. In Theresa’s free time she enjoys baking, crocheting, and exploring the back roads of California with her husband in their Land Rovers. 

Lupe migrated to the U.S. from Mexico as a young girl and worked in the fields with her parents from 18-22 years old when she began nursing school. She has been a bilingual nurse educator in Watsonville, Salinas and the Monterey Peninsula for over 20 years. She helped to establish all the Primary Care Clinics for the Monterey County Health Dept. including the Student Health Center at CSUMB. She also helped coordinate the CPSP program at the Seaside Family Health Center where she discovered her forte, women’s health. She taught CPR, first aid, parent education, childbirth, and certification classes for nurses’ aides at Salinas Adult School for over 15 years. Lupe loves to teach and empower Hispanic women and their families.

Physical and Occupational Therapists

Trish attended the University of Evansville in Indiana for both her Bachelor's of Exercise and Sports Science and her Doctoral Degree of Physical Therapy. After graduation, Trish and her husband, Matthew, worked as travel physical therapists for about 5 years, completing her Neurodevelopmental Treatment Certification (C/NDT) in the Management and Treatment of Children with Cerebral Palsy and Other Neuromotor Disorders. She and her husband are committed to reaching patients and families that are unable to get services in the typical clinic setting, which has led Trish to partner with Coastal Kids Home Care. During her free time, Trish enjoys swimming, hiking and spending time outside.

Judy received her undergraduate degree from UC Santa Barbara in Developmental Psychology and her master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from Samuel Merritt University. She has nearly 20 years experience as a pediatric occupational therapist including more than 14 years at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford University Medical Center. Her specialties include oncology, feeding & swallowing disorders, palliative & end of life care, and program development. Judy is passionate about working with seriously ill children and believes children thrive well in their natural home environment.

 

Palliative Care and Counseling

Ruth received her undergraduate degree from U.C. Davis in Sociology and a master’s degree in Social Work from California State University, Sacramento, specializing in medical social work, death/dying, and grief. She joined Coastal Kids Home Care in 2010 after working with adult hospice patients in Monterey County for seven years. She obtained a Licensed Clinical Social Worker degree in 2014. She is passionate about her work with Coastal Kids, food, chocolate, and celebrating birthdays!

Angelica Martínez was born in San Francisco but was raised in King City. She received her BA and MA at Cal State Monterey Bay and is working towards her LCSW. In 2012, she launched a storytelling program for children and their families in order to facilitate and strengthen familial bonds in the community. In 2014, she was part of the team that started the Interagency Consortium South County Autism Screen Project which screens children with developmental delays and coordinates much needed services for low income communities. Since 2016 she has worked with Coastal Kids. Outside of work and community service she enjoys rollerblading and hiking.

Kathryn received her undergraduate from Fresno State in Health Science with an emphasis in Community Mental Health. While earning her master’s degree from Pacifica Graduate Institute in Counseling Psychology with an emphasis in Depth Psychology she worked with homeless adults with severe psychiatric disabilities around Monterey County. After graduating and beginning her journey to get licensed through the BBS in California, she worked with elementary and middle school aged children who have experienced a variety of trauma throughout Monterey County in their respective schools. She joined Coastal Kids in 2018. Outside of work she likes to spend time at the beach with her family and is a member of the civil air patrol.

 

Stephanie Gonzalez was born and raised in Santa Cruz County. She received her BS and MSW at Cal State Monterey Bay (CSUMB) and is also graduating as a two time Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Scholarship recipient. After completing her first year internship with Coastal Kids, Stephanie said she found her forever home and refused to leave Coastal Kids. As a new grad and current employee she is pursuing her LCSW to provide mental health services for children and their families. Stephanie is not only a mother of two but on her down time Stephanie  also serves as a volunteer for CASA. As a court appointed spokes advocate she not only creates a permanent connection but offers her friendship and support for foster youth whose lives are forever changing.
